Collingwood v Hawthorn - Player Rankings

1. Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn): A great finals performance, attacked every contest like it was his last. There were players with more possessions, but no one influenced the game more than Lewis.

2. Dane Swan (Collingwood): Top possession winner on the ground and a great four quarter performance. Showed great strength and speed on a number of occasions and kicked a crucial goal in the last quarter.

3. Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn): Faded a little in the second half, but was easily best on ground in the first half. 31 touches at over 80% efficiency.

4. Shaun Burgoyne (Hawthorn): As Tom Harley said in the commentary, there were times when Burgoyne looked like his old explosive self. Won a number of key contests early in the game and repeatedly put his body on the line.

5. Travis Cloke (Collingwood): In many ways Cloke was the difference between the two teams. Allowed Collingwood to go long to contests when they struggled to find time and space early in the game. Took a great mark on half forward in the third quarter.

6. Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood): Quiet early, had only 2 touches in the first 10 minutes, but came into the game in the second quarter. Finished as the equal top possesion getter, but his efficiency was slightly down.

7. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn): Managed to influence the game, despite little opportunity and poor delivery. His goal in the last quarter deserved to be the game winner.

8. Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn): Not a high volume game, but his work rate was extraordinary. Seemed like the one Hawthorn player that could find time on half forward. Finished with 8 inside 50's.

9. Grant Birchall (Hawthorn): Stood up one on one and imposed himself on the contest, played like a player worthy of All Australian selection.

10. Luke Ball (Collingwood): An unlikely hero. Had a solid game without being spectacular, but found himself in the right place at the right time.

11. Nick Maxwell (Collingwood): Has had a lot of doubters throughout his career but the longer he plays, it seems the better he gets. Has a great ability to influence the contest even when he's out of position.

12. Chris Tarrant (Collingwood): Despite the fact that Franklin had a good game, Tarrant did nothing wrong. Early in the game he was exposed one on one by Hawthorn's early entries into the 50, but managed on nearly all occasions to bring the ball to ground. Played Buddy differently to most, standing in front and attacking the ball.

13. Chris Dawes (Collingwood): Looked the most dangerous of Collingwood's forwards early. This performance re-affirmed his value and might earn him a new contract at the Pies.

14. Luke Hodge (Hawthorn): Was quiet early, but became more influential as the game went on. Hard at the contest all game and kicked a key goal late.

15. Brad Sewell (Hawthorn): His pressure and tackling was excellent as always, but his skills and decision making let him down at times.

16. Brent Guerra (Hawthorn): Provided a couple of heart in mouth moments, but for the most part showed poise and at the back.

17. Paul Puopolo (Hawthorn): Leon Davis got away from him at the start, but he did well to nullify his influence after quarter time. Can't fault his work rate, but he cost Hawthorn a couple of clear chances late due to poor decision making.

18. Josh Gibson (Hawthorn): Was a rock again for the Hawks and showed great on-field leadership after Collingwood's key forwards started to take control early in the game.

19. Heath Shaw (Collingwood): Solid, but didn't have his usual influence on the game. Had a game high 11 marks, but wasn't given the freedom to run and carry.

20. Jarryd Blair (Collingwood): Some suggested that Blair might be the one to drop out of the team instead of Fasolo, but on the back of this performance you can see why Malthouse has stuck with him. Worked tirelessly as a defensive forward and was clean and effective in possession.

21. Ben Stratton (Hawthorn): Didn't have huge numbers, but influenced a lot of contests.

22. Ben Johnson (Collingwood): Was influential early in the game, but faded slightly. Struggled a little with less space and time.

23. Leon Davis (Collingwood): Looked like he was going to have a huge game early on, but was punished for being careless and cocky with the ball at times. Was thrown forward in the third, which is typically a sign that Mick doesn’t like what he's seeing down back.

24. Liam Shiels (Hawthorn): Was down on his normal tackling numbers, but seemed ever present at stoppages and contests.

25. Darren Jolly (Collingwood): Faded in and out of the game, looked set to have a greater influence than what he ended up having. Limped off the ground late with a groin problem.

26. David Hale (Hawthorn): Was clumsy and untidy early and gave away some careless free kicks. Could have had a greater influence than what he did, but failed to take his chances. Missed what looked an easy mark in the goal square early in the third quarter.

27. Alan Didak (Collingwood): The only meaningful contribution Didak made was a precise kick along the boundary to Cloke in the fourth quarter. Apart from that he didn't have much opportunity (played just a quarter as the sub).

28. Harry O'Brien (Collingwood): Like Shaw, Harry held up well defensively, but failed to have his usual influence in an attacking sense.

29. Ben Reid (Collingwood): The numbers look good, 12 one-percenters, but didn't appear to have a huge influence. Limped off early with a quad problem, his fitness will be a big talking point throughout the week.

30. Thomas Murphy (Hawthorn): Was more poised than usual and held his own one on one.

31. Dale Thomas (Collingwood): Looked and played like a Byron Bay local early on. Was uncharacteristically off the pace. Even though his tackle numbers look good, often that was the result of sloppy play or poor decision making. The Pies will expect a lot more next week.

32. Alan Toovey (Collingwood): A typical performance... nothing spectacular, nothing horrendous.

33. Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood): Faded in and out of the game and at times he didn't seem to understand the pace and intensity of the game.

34. Isaac Smith (Hawthorn): The game was almost too direct for Smith to get involved, couldn't seem to find the ball with his typical outside running. Ended up with 20 touches, but only had 8 kicks, where normally he'd opt to kick 8 or 9 times out of 10.

35. Ryan Schoenmakers (Hawthorn): Had he taken that mark deep in the backline late, Schoenmakers might have been in the top 20. But he dropped it and the resulting bounce lead to Luke Ball's winning goal. Played a really solid second half up to that point.

36. Chance Bateman (Hawthorn): Cost his team dearly with poor decision making and poor execution. Had chances in the fourth quarter to set Hawthorn up on half forward, but turned the ball over repeatedly.

37. Michael Osborne (Hawthorn): Had little or no influence on the game and didn't seem to influence contests like normal.

38. Max Bailey (Hawthorn): The ruckman didn't have a huge influence on the game. Bailey struggled to have any influence around the ground.

39. Andrew Krakouer (Collingwood): Had one or two moments of inspiration early but was sloppy by hand and foot. After this performance, his spot isn't guaranteed.

40. Sharrod Wellingham (Collingwood): Seemed a little rattled by the increased intensity. Made what could have been a big blue on the wing late in the game when he kicked the ball 5 metres to a contest after getting up dazed from a contest.

41. Matt Suckling (Hawthorn): Probably could have been activated earlier. Gave away a stupid 50 metre penalty just after coming on.

42. Leigh Brown (Collingwood): Did two things that I can remember. Hip and shouldered Jordan Lewis and kicked a grubber along the boundary late in the fourth quarter. Both were meaningful contributions, but the Pies would expect more next week.

43. Brendan Whitecross (Hawthorn): Had a shocker! A team high 6 clangers.

44. Dayne Beams (Collingwood): Dare say he won't sleep much this week after this performance. Both Suckling and Didak (as subs) collected more possessions than Beams in just a quarter of play. Alex Fasolo would be grinning from ear to ear.
